Black and Grey

Black and Grey *

Black and grey is a classic tattooing style that uses only black ink in varying shades to create depth, contrast, and texture. Originating from prison and street tattoo culture in the late 20th century, it has since evolved into a respected art form known for its realism, subtlety, and timeless appeal.

This is a cover-up I collaborated on. I used the tattoo underneath to determine where to place the flowers, and the natural gradients of the flowers transformed the skin underneath, giving the hand a whole new look.

Black and grey, especially when paired with fine line work, lets me tell complex stories with a clean, minimalist touch. I’m drawn to the balance between precision and softness—how thin lines, open space, and delicate shading can bring depth and movement without overpowering the skin. It’s bold in its simplicity, and I love the way that gives each tattoo room to breathe, evolve, and speak for itself.
